 The Lobley One-Name Study

Lobley Hall, Ilton cum Pott, North Yorkshire

Main Feature

Introduction

My name is Philip Lobley. I've created this website to hold all Lobley, Loblay, Lobly, Lobbley family trees (as well as those of other variant surnames) and to explain something of the origins of the Lobley name and of the various families, from all over the world, that bear the name. The website also holds my own extended family tree, with my Lobley, Cliffen, Hall(s) and Goodwin ancestors. My hope is that, over time, I will be able to establish links between many of the separate families in my study.

Born in 1953 and brought up in Grays, Essex, England, I first became interested in family history about 40 years ago when my parents were visited by some American cousins (not Lobleys). They were keen to discover some information about their English roots. I helped them start - and my interest grew from there. I started by joining family history societies for the areas where many Lobley families had their origins, visited record offices, libraries and parish churches, copied mountains of information on the Lobley family and, most importantly, spent time talking to family members. I am now a member of the Society of Genealogists and the Guild of One-Name Studies.

Progress

After an initial trial run at a website several years ago, I decided to start afresh using the facilities provided by the Guild of One-Name Studies to host the website and to preserve its data.

The website went live in October 2019 and the genealogical database initially only comprised my own personal tree 'My Lobley Tree'. That tree also includes what I know of the ancestors of all four of my grandparents. The second, and much larger 'tree' on the website comprises the main database of my One Name Study and actually contains a large number of completely separate trees and records of unconnected individuals. Having almost completed the process of adding media to this Tree, I have now moved on to adding more detail to the individual records.

The process of exporting the Study from my genealogy software to TNG has not been easy and some errors may have crept in, especially misplaced geographical coordinates and incorrect census images. Please let me know if you find any errors on the site and I will endeavour to correct them as soon as possible.

Using the website

To find an individual or family, use the Search or Advanced Search link near the top left of the home page. Other than their initials, data on any living person is not available.

Advanced search may be used to search the database in different ways.

If you have any queries on my One-Name Study on own my family tree please do not hesitate to contact me using the link on the Home Page. If you spot any errors or omissions or would like me to add any information to individuals in my study, please let me know. Similarly, I will be happy to consider any suggestions you may have on the layout and functioning of the website.
